DECALLATION CYCLE

There is a point when a conversation takes on a path and direction of it’s own. When there is a
sense that it is a separate entity from its human origins, and those sharing in it have the sense of
being guided rather then being the ones in control. The same thing can happen with an art
project.

This project interprets with various artistic disciplines and media the struggles and adaptations when communication breaks down...whether through language barrier, or through network devices such as chat. How do we work to express and be understood when we have different language and cultural cues...how do we work to express and be understood when the symbols of written language are out only information, and non-verbal cues such as expression and gesture are taken away.

Open Decallation
Opensound lisbon

A decal is a shadow of its former context, an object on its own, a trace of its former self. "Open Decallation" as well refers to recall and recollection. Its main sources are various text chats and messages composed between members of the Opensound group during the production process. Run like a salon to promote discussion in the midst of experiencing the audio/visual aspects of the work, "Open Decallation" acts as a living catalog of an event and its production. A special thank you for Granular and the fine folk at Opensound.

Decalled Upon
Decalcomania project

"For Decalcomania Maile exhibits Decalled Upon, a video and sound installation that uses the
conversations that Decalcomania has generated as its material; and which interprets, with various
artistic disciplines and media, the struggles and adaptations when communication breaks
down…Whether through language barrier, or through network devices such as chats and video-chats.

Maile’s installation will also be used as the basis of a collaborative performance with Maile and local
dancer and PhD student Ruth Pethybridge. Their improvisational dance performance will activate the
installation and aims to address, through dance, the questions that arise from her installation. How do
we work to express and be understood when we have different languages and cultural cues? How do
we work to express and be understood when the symbols of written language are our only information,
and non-verbal cues such as expression and gesture are taken away?"
